remember the 1st time i went to alton towers in 2015 just for cbeebies land (they changed the bugbies and logo and the postman pat ride is gone and will potentially be replaced by a bluey attraction) but even also for rides like runaway mine train (their oldest rollercoaster made by mack rides) and congo river rapids? well guess what? i went there for the 2nd time because of a school trip to conclude year 12!
the journey to and back lasted around 2 hours on the coach, which isn't bad but when i saw the welcome sign and the monorails, i knew we were in for a treat. however, we were given an emergency phone number - just in case we get lost but i also needed one of my friends' phone numbers just because the park also includes a fuck ton of claw machines (they had winnie the pooh plushies which i tried grabbing before and after my rollercoaster rides - but failed because they were too weak despite the perfect grab) which i loathed so much because it just makes the game too unfair! even the topper quattro filled with tiggers and eeyores won't even close its claw at all and i kept going to the giga techno filled with piglets (that most of the time i had to hum/sing a pooh song for luck), but most of the time i sat in the shade to pass the time instead.
for the 6 hour duration of the park, i could only go on 2 roller coasters because i don't wanna get sick and get vertigo. i was scared to go on oblivion at first, but my mind prompted me to go on it because it looks terrifying and harmless at the same time as my friends were going on it and i knew i wanted to ride it due to me watching countless of videos relating to it.
this was what riding oblivion felt like in my perspective: when you go into the queue line, your mind is asking questions such as 'is this safe?', 'what does the drop feel like?', 'what is your body like when the train drops you?' whilst hearing the suspenseful, techno, dnb music which sounded like a science experiment done to torture humans (it was literal because of renny krupinski talking to you on the tv screens). after hearing the enduring sci-fi-like music with krupinski talking to you about what the ride feels like on the queue, we were finally at the station with 2 trains waiting for us. we had to sit at b1; which was the train facing the front. the seatbelts were exactly like airplane seats. however, i had to hold onto someone's hands as i was still not prepared for it and when the train left the station with the figure on the screens vanishing, the ride began. the steep hills felt like sleeping at first, but once the train slowly rotates and stops at a ledge, you know that you are going to be fucked as you are given the 3 enduring words "don't look down" (fun fact: they used to say it from the loudspeakers but they removed it due to complaints from neighbours living near the park) as the train dropped into the tunnel pit, it felt like dying whilst the water vapours acting like smoke and i had to protect my glasses because i almost lost them, but when the ride finished, it was like going to heaven when the train returned to its station. overall, i still feel the anxiety and the shock oblivion felt me and it's now my favourite ride now!
(sorry for the shaky cam but i tried to nudge the train by hitting the restraint handles)
for me riding wicker man, i don't mind the queue but i still remember when the tv channel e4 made created a wicker man themed ident when rebranding their channel during september 2018 (6 months after alton towers opened the rollercoaster to replace the flume) and once we got ourselves wristbands to replace our belongings, we were brought into a 40 second preshow booming at us that we were were 'the chosen gift'. then, we got into the station with trains awaiting us. the start of the ride was fine at first, just watch the views of the park itself, but once you get to the drop, you go out of control by screaming and the occasional wtfs said by my friends as the train uncontrollably accelerates in and out of the wicker man statue (named big bob) 3 times like the 2006 wicker man film's 'not the bees' scene - however, i suffered from urine pain afterwards due to anxiety, alongside the body cramps, sinking feeling heartbeats and trauma.
overall, alton towers is worth the visit, and i decided to eat at just chicken for lunch when my stomach was empty and it is worth a visit. sadly i didn't get the chance to ride on th13teen or the smiler because i ended up imposing a 2 rollercoaster limit.
